Being creative and using quality materials in the design of your products is a must if you want to stay one step ahead of all the rest. However, there is another quality that can help get your company recognized. Consider using eco-friendly promotional gifts as a way to advertize your business.

With all the emphasis being put on green living today, imagine how much recognition this would bring your company. Not only are you giving out great items to your potential customers but you’re showing that you care for the planet at the same time.

Other benefits include the following:

  • You’re helping to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the landfills.
  • They’re cost effective, which is important to all companies.

Biodegradable Products: What Makes Them Better?

You’ve most likely heard over and over again how the landfills are overflowing and waste is polluting our planet. It’s becoming more difficult to find ways to dispose of all the waste created each year. No one knows for sure how much more abuse the earth can take. For this reason, scientist invented biodegradable products to help reduce the waste created each year.

When a product is listed as being biodegradable, this means that instead of lying in the landfills for hundreds of years, the item will break down and be absorbed by the environment. A true biodegradable product is not harmful to the planet because when it’s no longer in use, it will safely break down in a short period of time and return to its natural state. They normally break down into one of the following: Carbon, hydrogen, fungi, bacteria, oxygen and simple organisms.

There are many new products out there today that have been designed to help reduce the amount of waste being sent to the landfills. It’s up to everyone on the planet to make a decision to do their part and look for these items each time you go shopping. You can make a difference when you take a stand and make changes. You do, however, need to be careful when choosing your products to make sure the items you buy are truly good for the environment. Not all products listed as biodegradable are safe to use.

It can be difficult to change your normal routine and try new things but once you break those old habits, you’ll discover many new and exciting biodegradable products that work just as good as or even better than some of the traditional ones. Start looking for your biodegradable products today.

How Smoking Pollutes the Planet

Smoking is a big issue that has been the middle of controversy for a lot of years. There are many different opinions surrounding cigarette smoking and how it affects people and the environment. It’s been known for many years that smoking causes various medical problems and this is one of the biggest things smokers use in their defense. They believe they are only hurting themselves so why does anyone else care if they smoke or not.

Years ago, this was a good defense but things have changed over the last several years. We now know that cigarette smoke affects more than the person doing the smoking. Second hand smoke causes many health problems for anyone in the surrounding area and it does pollute the air. In fact, there are more than four thousand chemicals released into the air when a smoker exhales.

As a smoker, you might think that you don’t smoke enough to do any real damage and if you were the only person to smoke that would be true. However, when you take into consideration all of the smokers in the world, that’s an awful lot of chemicals being released into the atmosphere just from cigarettes alone.

Another thing that many people don’t realize is that smoking can also pollute the ground and water supply. If you’re wondering how, think for one moment about where all those cigarette butts end up. Millions of them end up being thrown on the ground where they pollute the soil and others end up in the lakes and streams that feed the water supplies.

Consider for one moment the enormous impact that producing cigarettes create. Harmful pesticides and other chemicals are used on the tobacco plants and think about all of those trees that are being cut down to make the packages they’re placed in before they can be sold. Add in the energy and water used to make them and you can see how much of an impact cigarettes actually have on the planet.

New laws are being put into place to prevent many people from smoking in public places. These laws are meant to help reduce the amount of pollution caused by smoking cigarettes. It’s expected that even more laws will be put into place in the future.

Using Wind Energy at Home

Are you looking for ways that you can be more eco friendly and use less energy within your home? You have probably already heard that wind energy is one option you have. However, the average home owner doesn’t understand how they can use wind energy at home. How does it work and how expensive is it to set up a system for yourself?

These are valid questions to ask and the good news is, it’s now becoming easier than ever before to use wind energy and other alternative energy sources in your own home. Wind energy is considered a type of renewable energy, like solar power. This is because it is readily available in our environment and is not at risk of being used up.

When it was first released, wind energy was mainly for big companies and mainly for pumping water. Today it is much more readily available to the average home owner. People who are using it today face an average of 80% reduction in their electricity consumption.

If you’re interested in getting wind energy started at your home, there are even step-by-step guides available today to help you get started. The government of many countries, including the US are trying to help people by offering tax breaks and other benefits to switching to alternative energy sources as well.

When using wind energy at home, you just need to be sure it’s installed correctly so that you are getting the true benefit of using it and that you find the answers to any questions you have regarding how it works. Knowledge is power and with it, we can find a better future.

Solar Power House Job 1 – Solar Hot Water

If there is a solar power house application that stands out as the place to begin, it is the production of solar hot water for domestic consumption.  The reason for this is that this application is usually the most cost-effective and simplest home solar application that can be undertaken. On average, the cost of producing domestic hot water by conventional means constitutes between twenty-five and thirty-three percent of total home energy costs, and a solar hot water system can save between two-thirds and eighty-five percent of this energy cost.

Another important reason to start with this project in converting a fossil energy home to solar is the increasing possibilities of good do-it-yourself (DIY) solar water projects, either from scratch or buying easy to install kits available on the internet that are easy to implement and much cheaper than a “turn-key” contractor installation. Additionally, if full or partial solar water home heating  is a feasible prospect, such a system can be very economically and efficiently integrated.

Most solar water systems consist of solar thermal panels (heat collectors), a fluid system to move the collected heat from the panel to storage or its point of usage, a heat storage unit (usually); and a method for moving the fluid between the collector and storage of the point of usage. An active system uses electric pumps and controllers to move the fluid, and a passive system uses only thermosyphon and gravity to naturally circulate the fluid as it is heated. However, in some passive systems an integral collector storage system (ICS or “batch system”) may be employed if usage patterns are appropriate.  These systems have one or more black storage tanks inside a glazed insulated box where cold water is preheated in the solar collector tanks before moving into a conventional water heater.

If a “zero-carbon” active system is desired, there are also some good, inexpensive DIY solar power electricity packages which make it practical to generate sustainable onsite electricity with which to pump the fluid and to operate its control electronics. Regardless of whether an active or passive system is employed, both usually have a backup heat source included to heat the water as necessary to maintain appropriate temperatures.

Flat-plate panels are normally used to collect heat in residential solar applications for two reasons: they achieve adequately high temperatures (less than 200 degrees Fahrenheit), and they are significantly less expensive than next collector alternative. A flat-plate collector usually consists of (1) a black metal or plastic plate to absorb the solar heat, (2) a transparent glass or plastic cover which allows the solar heat to pass through to the absorber but reduces heat loss, and (3) a plastic or metal insulated box with which to enclose the heat absorber. The heat transfer fluid usually flows through tubes integrated with the heat absorber. The usual practice is to use flat-plate solar collectors with a fixed orientation to the sun. And, the highest solar capture efficiency is obtained if the collector faces toward the sun and slopes at an angle to the horizon equal to the latitude plus about 10 degrees.

In this as in all alternative energy applications, there is the dual benefit of reducing fossil power expenses while reducing the associated fossil fuel environmental impacts of conventional energy generation.

Carter Reames is an engineer whose personal interest in solar power and other alternative energy activities started with the 1973 oil embargo. Interest in solar and all alternative energy forms waned during the era of unreasonably cheap fossil energy. But, the combined effect of recent higher energy costs and environmental issues has reignited his interest in solar power with a passion.

Going Green With a Wind Turbine – Just in Time For Winter

Unfortunately for many this year, this autumn season won’t be about enjoying the beauty of the changing leaves, but rather about worrying how they are going to pay their utility bills during the winter. Going green can help save some money all winter, and all year long. Start today.

Summer, as always, seemed to just fly by. Now that our attention is turning from outside to inside it’s time to take stock of our home and try to figure out what we can do to get the biggest bang for our utility buck this winter.

There are literally dozens of things you can do to save some money on your electric bills, some of them are big and will save you thousands, and others are smaller and will save you hundreds. Either way make as many changes as you can now and you’ll save money not only over the winter but for years to come.
Some of the easier, less expensive changes you can make are:

1. Unplug unused electronics. You may not realize it but even if they’re not turned on they are still in stand-by mode and they are still drawing electricity, so you are still paying for using them. Just unplug them.

2. Replace you’re burnt out light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs. You can buy a bunch now and go through your house, or you can just wait until a bulb burns out to replace it.

3. Get a programmable thermostat.

All of these things will save you a few hundred dollars over the course of the year. If you want more savings than you should consider these things:

1. Install energy efficient windows and doors.
2. Increase the amount of insulation you have in your home.
3. Build your own wind turbine. Some of these wind energy kits can reduce your electric bill by more than half.

As you can see, you do have options when it comes to saving money on your utility bills and going green. You can start as big, or as small, as you want. The important thing is that you start today.

Saving Water in the Bathroom is a Good Start to Going Green

Those who want to start becoming ecologically smart, or who want to go green may be looking for ways to do this.  One of the easiest ways to start a go green campaign at home is to start in the bathroom.  More water is wasted in this room than any other area of the home, inside or out.  The following are a few tips to get your bathroom green and ecologically sound:

  • Use Low Flow Showerheads – Low flow shower heads offer just as much water pressure as the higher flowing types do.  They simply use less water doing it.  This is a great way for those in areas that rely heavily on water conservation.  When you take a shower with these types of showerheads, you are saving almost half the water you would normally be using.  Also, you should limit your time in the shower to five to seven minutes, no more than that.
  • Use Low Flow Toilets – These toilets work in the same way as the showerheads.  They use less water to flush away waste which adds up to a lot of water saved overall.  The toilet can be a huge waste of water, especially for large families.  Using a low flow toilet with the low flow shower heads can reduce your water bill by half.
  • Have Your Light Fixtures Changed to Energy Savers – Energy saving light fixtures are all the rage right now.  If you have the old vanity light bulbs that generate a lot of heat, they probably are using a good deal of electricity as well.  You can save some money and do more for the environment by using energy saving light bulbs and fixtures instead.

Go Green with Reusable Grocery Bags

Plastic grocery bags are one of the main contributors to landfills.  These bags are not recyclable and are just a waste for the environment.  The only thing that they are good for is bringing groceries home and using them as garbage bags in times when you are out.  These are not really good reasons to use these plastic grocery bags.

How many people have a cupboard full of the plastic grocery bags that are used in most grocery stores?  Probably a good many of you have at least a few stashed somewhere in the kitchen or garage.  What is the point of having all these bags lying around or being thrown away when the groceries have been put away?

There is no point really, not when there are eco friendly reusable cloth grocery bags that can be used for this task.  These bags are not very expensive.  Some stores offer them at a discount with a certain monetary purchase that is made.  Sometimes they are given away for free by the grocery store.

These cloth bags can be used over and over again to bring groceries home from the store.  Just bring them with you and tell the cashier or bag person that you have your own bags.  They are going to be more than happy to bag your groceries in the bags you provide rather than using their bags.

Instead of clogging up the landfills with nasty plastic bags, opt for you own bags that you bring with you.  When you are asked the question, “Paper or plastic?” you can answer, “Neither, I have my own bags”!

Extreme Home Makeover Goes Green

The popular TV show Extreme Home Makeover has been making a splash this new season with more “green builds”. It began after a debut, 2 hour premiere of a home for a family who already tried to live more green and reduce their carbon footprint but now every build they do, they are going green.

There is a focus on reduce, reuse and recycle as well as energy efficiency and smarter home builds. I’ve always liked the show. It’s truly based around helping families who need and deserve help that they would probably never get on their own or someplace else.

But I especially love the new green fever the show has this season. It’s good to see something like this promoting eco friendly living and it’s also great fun to see the many different features that are being used in these builds.

Eco friendly technology is growing and advancing every day and the show often uses some of the newest and most cutting-age inventions in going green. It’s great to see what is available out there, how homes can be better built for the environment and what our future could be like if we could all begin to make these new changes.

I hope that the popularity of the show will also lead to more people considering more eco-friendly options in their own homes. Not only is it great for the environment and our future earth, but it can help you save money. It just makes sense all around and I’m happy to see Extreme Home Makeover supporting this new, improved way of living.
